Production Title: Shoppers Paradise
This song was chosen to make our music video because it is a fast catchy up beat fun song, with a lot of different ironic lyrics. We like the way in which the lyrics have an underlying meaning to what you might first expect, and think that it would be interesting to portray our own views on what the lyrics mean to us.
Recording medium: Panasonic HDC-SD10
Viewing context: DVD/Video
Genre: The genre of our music video is alternative. It will contain a variety of different lighting, lengths of shots filmed at different times of the day to fit with the lyrics of the song, based in a shopping centre. As the lyrics of the song are quite random we want to surprise the audience with some of our shots, as it might not be what you normally expect from a music video.
Audience: The music video is aimed at male and female aged 18+. It will grab the attention of the viewers because of the bold colours with in our shots and the controversial meaning behind some of our shots. The music video and lyrics would probably appeal more to an older age group as a younger age group might find it strange as they do not understand the irony between the lyrics at the shopping centre to the real world, therefore it might not make sense to a younger age group.
Aim: Our main aim is to successfully create a music video. This should captivate the audience into watching the rest of the video. We will intend to create a certain atmosphere that makes the viewer feel involved and grab their attention. This first few shots of our music video are crucial to keeping the audience wanting to watch so we have given them something to follow to make them feel more involved. We will also use fast edits for lots of different shots to make sure the audience does not get bored. We will use characters of different ages with in our music video to create a more everyday feel in the shopping centre, although our main characters will be quite young. We will introduce the main character from the first shot so that the audience will stay familiar with him right the way through, and can follow the video.
Narrative Elements: As the lyrics to our song are very random and ironic we will not have a particular narrative but we will focus more on everyday like in the supermarket in contrast to on the street, the underlying meaning of the lyrics. We set the shopping centre scene by following the man who welcomes everybody into the shopping centre. The narrative is about what this man sees everyday and how the shopping centre is a ‘Wonderful World’. Once the audience has been welcomed into the shopping centre we cut to different shot all around it so that the audience has a feel for where we are.
We start off with our first few shots following the lyrics of the song, such as ‘ground floor shoppers paradise’ we have filmed from the top floor down so that the audiences can associate these together. ‘Habit dashary, needles..’ is an example where we have taken another meaning for they lyrics because what they are talking about is a sewing shop but we have interpreted this meaning into ‘real life’ that ‘needles’ could mean a syringe which people use to take dugs with, so we have mixed the two meaning together and filmed a shot of buttons and syringes falling in front of the camera. We have also left the sound of them falling because it grabs the attention of the viewer. This is the first shot that we start to introduce the controversial meaning of the music video.
The chorus of the song ‘lady’s and gentlemen, boys and girls, the big shop is open it’s a wonderful world’ is part of the narrative because it is our main character miming the words to the song welcoming the people into the shops, as his job. We have filmed this from different angles but he is still standing in the same place at the entrance to welcome people. For lighting we used the bright shopping centre lights because we want the feel to be as though you could be there.
Narrative Codes: This material will create the whole atmosphere of the video. As it is a music video there is obviously words spoken in the song. This will mainly give the meaning and give the audience understanding of the song. The shots will be edited so they are in beat of the song. The upbeat theme of the song will reflect the characters personality.
Logistics: Our location of the music video is mainly around the shopping centre. We have filmed in the real local shopping centre because it is not an easy scene to recreate effectively. We have however created the feel of a clothes shop by using our own clothes rail because this give us much more flexibility with what we actually want to film. We have many characters in the video, some which are very natural, and as we filmed in the shopping centre itself this means that we could have the busy background. A lot of our film was helped acted by friends, as the main part and just some extra walking by, for example our shot of feet we used our friends because we could keep the shot flowing and be able to direct the shot as we wanted it. We have created different moods within our music video by using different lighting, props, camera movement editing and facial expressions of our actors.
